Ballast Resistor Install for Points Ignition

Ballast Resistor Install for Points Ignition

A common practice in the 60s-70s was to use a resistive wire as the main power feed to the coil (15003). This meant that when 12v was applied at the ignition switch by the time the power got to the coil the voltage was reduced to about 9v. This was done to prolong the life of the points.

While the original type of resistive wire is still available, it is not commonly used these days in reproduction harnessed for a number of reasons. As an alternative the simplest solution is to place a resistor in line at the coil if you are still using a points ignition system.

15003 (Orange) Ignition Power

15001 (Pink) Crank voltage (full 12v on crank only)

15057 (Green) Tachometer wire.
